Our book club has not met in person for a year now. But once in awhile we send out an email with a list of books and if anyone wants them we get the books to them somehow. This is one of those books that travelled across the city and was picked up on a doorstep.
The Swap follows three women, Low, Freya, and Jamie.
Low is a senior in high school who sees Freya at school posting an ad about a pottery class. Low is immediately drawn to her and ends up being the only one signed up for the class. Low thinks she and Freya are best friends. One day Low finds out that Freya has another friend, Jamie and we see how jealous Low gets.
Freya and her ex-NHL husband (Max) have moved to the island to get away from the controversy surrounding the end of Max's NHL career. Freya used to be a social media influencer and that all collapsed after Max's career ended. She claims to be lonely and seems to be a kind, caring person.
Jamie and her husband (Brian) moved to the island to escape the loss they feel from not being able to start a family. Brian is working on a second book and Jamie opened a shop in town selling locally curated items.
One evening after Jamie opened up more to Freya about her past and her love life with Brian, Freya invites the couple over for a fun night doing recreational drugs. Jamie goes to bed early when she doesn't feel good and wakes up to find Max in her bedroom. Freya was apparently with Brian. And to make it even more interesting, jealous Low stopped by and peeked in the window, witnessing everything. Soon everything starts falling apart and we start to see Freya's true character.
This was a good read, a bit outside of my normal books, but I was intrigued as I was reading and enjoyed it for the most part.
