I was looking for more books for Cover to Cocktails (remember the facebook/instagram page with my friend where we read a book and have a cocktail? Go check it out!), and came across this one. Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney wrote The Nest, which I really enjoyed! So I decided to try this one!
Good Company is about Flora Mancini, who has been happily married to Julian for over twenty years. On the day of her daughter Ruby's graduation, as she is searching for a picture to give her as a gift, she stumbles across something that will make her question her whole marriage.
This book goes back and forth between the present and the past. Flora was an aspiring actress and lived in New York with her roommate turned best friend Margot, who was also an aspiring actress. One night Flora meets Julian, also an actor, and falls in love. Shortly after, Margo meets her future husband David, a doctor. Eventually, Margo makes it big and moves to LA to film a primetime soap opera. Flora and Julian struggle to make ends meet and also struggle to have a child. Eventually they have Ruby and slowly they start to get a bit more successful. They too move to LA, but for Julian's work. Flora gave up on some of her dreams to help the family stay afloat and now does voice over work.
After Flora's discovery, she has to decide if she can forgive Julian, and if she wants to. She let go of many dreams to let him live his, and now might be the chance she has to follow her own.
The book was pretty good, I enjoyed most of it, though was bored at times, and sometimes didn't like the characters very much. But life is messy and this book shows that. This was a good read, but might be disappointing if you enjoyed The Nest.
