First book review! Woo woo!
This book hit my radar because I follow Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club. I have quite a few of her picks on my list of books to read and so far this is the only one I've read. Also while I mentioned that I don't usually read new releases, this happens to be a fairly new release.
Okay, I'm going to do something that often bothers me when I'm reading cooking blogs. I'm going to tell you a story before I get to the point. Seriously though, if I am on your site looking for a recipe, I really don't need to know all about what you did that day or month before you actually get to the recipe. And yet, here I am about to do the same thing. Sorry!
My oldest is seven and during grade one she went from reading books with a few words on each page to reading chapter books. It is amazing to think about how much kids learn in grade one. She has discovered the joy of reading and her favourite series is Humphrey the Hamster (I'm going to try to get her comments on the books she reads and put them up here too). She had read the first two and wanted to keep reading the next ones. So while I'm happy to buy them for her, I thought we should check the library website first. Well we found them, but it's quite a waiting list. I did put holds on them and then the youngest wanted bunny books (any book with a bunny will do, no worries about the plot as long as there is a bunny) so I thought hey I should get some books for me too! Daisy Jones and the Six was one of the books I put on hold. It was going to take months, but that was fine. I could wait. When the many bunny books were ready for pick up we went to the library and what did I see but Daisy Jones and The Six on the shelf…this I don’t understand….why is it on the shelf when so many people have requested a hold on the book…Calgary Public Library, please tell me! But hey, I’m not complaining, I got to read it six months earlier than I thought. And it was good.
As I started reading the book, I must admit I thought it was about a real band….about 20 pages in I thought hey maybe I can listen to some of their songs, so I googled the band and found out what I should have known all along, it’s all fictitious (clearly I don't read reviews, which makes me wonder why I am writing them...questions for another time). It was an enjoyable read, though drawn out at some points. Shocking revelation here, I’m boring and don’t understand the appeal of drugs or partying every night and never have (I read all the time, this really shouldn't be shocking). But if you can’t live vicariously through a book, then when can you? The characters were definitely not relatable for me, but I enjoyed following their lives. We follow the formation of The Six, the addition of Daisy, and their successes and failures. Daisy was a bit of a disaster throughout. Billy is the good looking leader of The Six, not only as singer, but also as song writer and overall decision maker. We see the love story of Billy and his wife play out and how the rock and roll lifestyle (see I'm not even cool enough to write rock 'n roll!) impacts their lives. The book reads like the transcript of VH1 Behind the Music (childhood memories!). It had a bit of a surprise ending, not a full out shocker, but an interesting twist. All in all, a good read.
PS. I have decided that there is no point in leaving a story summary. No one needs to read a summary here, what would the point of reading the book be when you already know what happens. So short and sweet with a cute story to start it off....hmmm, the recipe bloggers may have something here....
