This is one came from book club. I remember watching this movie years ago when my husband and I were first dating, though to be honest I couldn't remember much of the story when I started this book. I did remember that the story seemed bigger than life.
The book tells the story of Edward Bloom though stories he has told his son. Edward is dying and there are a few chapters dedicated to the mother and son dealing with Edward's illness. The rest of the book tell the story of Edward's life through fantastical stories he has told his son.
From being able to talk to animals, to escaping into the world from the town most people can't pass through, to rescuing a woman drowning who then rescues him later in life, it's a story almost like a fairy tale. While you know that everything has been exaggerated in the original stories to his son, you can't help but wish that there was a bit more magic in everyone's lives.
The books ends a bit strangely, which now that I'm thinking of it, I do seem to remember from the movie. The clues are there throughout the book for what will happen at the end.
The book is quite short and an easy read. It's not quite fantasy, but a nice distraction from the world we know.
